“Pavement Ants Be Gone: A Pest Control Expert’s Guide to Effective Control and Treatments”

Introduction:

Pavement ants (often called slab ants) are a common nuisance in many parts of the country, particularly in Michigan. These pesky critters can infiltrate your home through even the tiniest cracks in your foundation. Pavement ants nest approximately 12”-18” below grade.  And like all cold-blooded insects, as the temperature within their nesting sites rises, so does their body temperatures.  When this occurs their need for food and water increases. Pavement ants often nest below grade in rooms with no basements or next to foundations where the soil never freezes. As a pest control expert, I’ll share my expertise on the most effective treatments to help you bid farewell to these unwanted visitors.

Treatment Options:

  1. Baiting/Interior treatments: This is our go-to method for treating pavement ants. We use specialized bait containing slow-acting ingredients that allows ants to return to their colony, eliminating the queen and eventually the rest of the colony. In addition to bait, we also treat the baseboards in those areas affected with a water based residual product.
  2. Perimeter Sprays: During the warmer months, we apply a non-repellent residual product around the home’s foundation, creating a barrier that prevents ants from entering. This method is especially effective when combined with baiting.

Prevention is Key:

While treatments can reduce the occurrence of pavement ants, prevention is crucial to avoid future infestations. Here are some tips:

  • Seal all cracks and crevices around your home’s foundation
  • Keep your home clean and free of crumbs and spills
  • Remove standing water and ensure proper drainage
  • Have your home’s exterior treated semi-annually

Conclusion:

Pavement ants may be a nuisance, but with the right treatment and prevention strategies, you can keep them at bay. As pest control experts, we recommend combining these methods for optimal results. Don’t let pavement ants take over your home – take action today and enjoy a pest-free living space!
